(Dargomyzhsky Songs & Romances)

Marina Philippova

mezzo-soprano

Born in Leningrad, Marina Philippova studied in Moscow and at the Leningrad Conservatory, first in choral conducting and musicology, and later vocal performance under the well-known chamber singer Nelly Lee. Beginning in the 1980's, she appeared as a soloist with the antique music ensemble Pro Anima, performing on numerous tours and making several recordings of 14th to 17th century European music.

Philippova's current repertoire encompasses more than six centuries — from Guillaume de Machaut to Gustav Mahler and Benjamin Britten. Philippova appears with leading orchestras and chamber ensembles of Russia as well as foreign tours. A scholar as well as a performer, Philippova has devoted special attention to the baroque era and lesser-known Russian music of the 18th and 19th centuries, working with unique original editions and manuscripts from the archives of St. Petersburg.
