St. Panteleimon ChoirSt. Petersburg, Russia |
The St.Panteleimon Choir is an a capella choral ensemble based at the Church of St.Panteleimon in St.Petersburg, Russia. They also sing together as members of a folk ensemble at St.Petersburg University and have traveled extensively in northern and northwestern Russia collecting and performing traditional folk music of Russian villages.
The Church of St.Panteleimon was built in 1870 by the Russian imperial family, but after the Russian Revolution it was occupied by the Soviet government and used as a medical supply warehouse. In 1991 it was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church, but in ruined condition.
The St.Panteleimon Choir has performed in concert tours to Austria, Germany and the United States to help raise money for the restoration of the church. A part of the purchase price of every CD or tape goes to St.Petersburg to help rebuild the St.Panteleimon Church.
Members of the St. Panteleimon Choir:
| "We are not a large, academic choir.
We sing like the people sing in church choirs in the villages and monasteries of our
country. "Our most important purpose is to inspire people to pray. We want to reveal the Word of God. "I get inspiration for the creation of music when I read the text of the psalms or prayers. It is the Word of God, and when I feel myself as a child of God, then God gives me the music for these texts. All genious comes from only one God. We are just a quill in His hand, but He writes the music with that quill." |
