Eastern Liturgical Collection |
Comparatively little known in the West, the a cappella harmonies of traditional Russian Orthodox church music reflect the richness and depth of Slavic culture. Russian liturgical music has a meditative quality similar to Benedictine chant, but more melody and musical complexity.
We have begun this collection with examples of two very different styles of liturgical singing. The Gladsome Light album is consciously performed in the style of the rural churches and monasteries where Russian Christianity was preserved during the Soviet era. The Russian Christmas album embodies the majesty of the great halls and cathedrals which still remain today as reminders of Russia's past.
